I had my meeting/interview at the rec. center today so I got on campus around 1pm. After the meeting (I got the job!), I had a few hours on my hands before class started, so I took a scholarship check to financial aid and wandered around campus for a while. I passed what the kids (at the university childcare center my mom is the director) call “Rainbow Rock”. Of course it has an official name after whoever donated it/whoever it was donated in memory of, but Rainbow Rock is a much better name. Worried that I was looking a bit silly, I took a few photographs and got out of there before too many people started to notice.

David got these Buddha figurines for me while he was in China and I figured they would be the perfect subject for today’s photo. Today was the first full day that I’ve seen David in the past three weeks and all I want to do is spend time with him before he leaves again.

For class today everyone took the 10 minute walk from the classroom to the Flint Institute of Art. After about an hour of looking at masks from various parts of ancient Africa for the assignment, small groups of the class began to make their way back to their cars to leave. I needed a photo for today (of course), so I stopped to photograph the large sculptures outside of the building before I left for the day.

My grandma’s funeral was today so the family took the trip back up to West Branch again. It was a nice hot day outside, but I was freezing all day in the funeral home. The flowers from friends and family were incredibly pretty so I quickly took some photos. The ceremony was really nice and afterward everyone who wanted to went to the bowling alley (where yesterday’s picture was taken) for lunch. Once there, I had the most delicious bosco sticks ever made.

David and I met up midday once I got home from running errands and having lunch with my parents. We went to yet another open house, this one for our friend Veronica. She had these really cool sculpture figurines in one of the rooms of her house. With a little lighting help from David and a few weird glances as to what we were doing, I took a bunch of photographs of the various statues. This violin player was my favorite one.

Today was my orientation for college, so I spent the majority of my day being talked at and forced to participate in silly games. When I was finally released, I was able to locate this interesting circle archway I had seen when I was walking in. The weather wasn’t really participating though; this photograph would have looked a lot better with a blue sky or clouds behind it.

I was in desperate need to get my lifeguard certification updated so my mom and I took the two hour trip to Grand Rapids because the community college was offering a really fast-paced recertification class. That course was also the only one we could find anywhere near us in the next few months, so there really wasn’t a choice if I wanted to continue working my lifeguarding job. After I finished getting recertified, my mom and I decided to go visit my favorite zoo as a child (we used to live on that side of the state until we moved in 2001). I instantly recognized these penguin statues from my youth and became very nostalgic.
